Galvannealed Steel Blanks & Coils
Galvannealed steel is similar to hot-dipped galvanized steel, in which it is first dipped in a hot liquid bath of molten zinc. However, where it differs is the further processing in a method known as annealing. Immediately after being hot dipped in the molten zinc, the annealing process begins in which the coated steel passes through an in-line heat treatment that diffuses the excess zinc from the steel before it solidifies. This technique leaves the steel with a thinner zinc coating compared to ordinary galvanized steel. The process causes the coating to fuse with the steel substrate and leaves a surface that is slightly rough rather than smooth – making it ideal for the paint to adhere to it.
Galvannealed steel is primarily produced to be used in applications where the paint will be applied to the steel. As mentioned earlier, the annealing process leaves the finished product with a matte / non-smooth finish which enhances the adherence of paint more so than hot dipped galvanized steel which usually exhibits a smoother / shinier finish. This baked-on zinc coating protects the steel beneath it from the elements while increasing its resistance to scratching, corrosion, and wear. Galvannealed steel is also highly weldable as the zinc coating that has been fused with the substrate does not melt or cause build-up during welding (this build-up is also referred to as slag). Because galvannealed steel is intended to be painted which adds an additional protective layer to the steel, the typical coating that is applied runs lighter than what is normally applied to hot dipped galvanized steel.
Galvannealed Steel Applications
Galvannealed steel offers excellent corrosion and wears resistance, which makes it useful in many applications that demand long service life and exposure to the elements. Because of the combination of ideal paintability, uniform matte finish, and easy weldability, galvannealed steel provides excellent service when used in automobile production for both exposed and unexposed applications. It is also commonly used in the following applications:
- Buses
- Garage Doors
- Highway Signs
- Light & Heavy Trucks
- Trailer Components
- Fire Rated Doors
- Vending Machines
